Lungs is a powerhouse of a song, recorded by Townes in 1969. There's a lot of music written in this era that the band is heavily influenced by, including velvet underground, neil young, miles -- the whole woodstock era going on, but Lungs and the entirety of the self-titled album seem like a time capsule into a very dark, dusty and non-modern time in American music. The lyrics speak to bitterness and illness in such a way that it's almost a vicarious exploration - by singing them -- an exploration in a deep dark world where the barb wire lays in rolls over the landscape and there's no one out there to call out by name.
